Aim. Cardiac arrhythmias comprise a major health and economic burden and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality, including cardiac failure, stroke and sudden cardiac death (SCD). Development of efficient preventive and therapeutic strategies is hampered by incomplete knowledge of disease mechanisms and pathways. Our aim is to identify novel mechanisms underlying cardiac arrhythmia and SCD using an unbiased approach. Methods and Results. Infant autonomic reactivity to stress is a potential predictor of later life health complications, but research has not sufficiently examined sympathetic activity, controlled for effects of physical activity and respiration, or studied associations among autonomic adjustments, cardiac activity, and affect in infants. Stroke and cardiac arrhythmias.

Stroke is frequently followed by electrocardiographic (ECG) changes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the global incidence of these changes after ischemic or hemorrhagic strokes, but it focused on cardiac arrhythmias. In ischemic strokes, these were correlated with the side of the lesion(s). The study was retrospective, and 450 patients (out of 971 examined) were entered in the study based on the following inclusion criteria: (1) "completed" stroke (352 ischemic and 98 hemorrhagic), (2) ECG on admission, and (3) at least 1 previous ECG. Atrial fibrillation (AF), a cardiac arrhythmia classically described as completely desynchronized, is now known to show a certain amount of synchronized electrical activity. In the present work a new method for quantifying the level of synchronization of the electrical activity recorded in pairs of atrial sites during atrial fibrillation is presented. Different are the causes of cardioembolic stroke, but the most common is the atrial fibrillation, a supraventricular arrhythmia. Appropriate use of antiplatelet drugs and anticoagulants after transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or ischaemic stroke depends on whether the underlying cause is cardioembolic or of presumed arterial origin.
